Resident in Counseling

About Katie Atwell

I am a Resident in Counseling who works with individuals, adolescents, and families. I received a Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling from Divine Mercy University in Sterling, VA. During my clinical internship with Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington, I had the honor of walking alongside individuals facing challenges such as trauma, PTSD, mood disorders, sexual abuse, anxiety, domestic abuse, depression, navigating relationships, and various life stressors.

I earned my undergraduate degree in History and Education from the University of Mary Washington. I spent several years teaching history and theology at the high school level. While I enjoyed teaching, it was the sacred moments outside the classroom—listening to and supporting my students—that drew me toward counseling, offering me the opportunity to become an agent of change in the lives of others.

In my work, I integrate sound scientific and psychological principles within a foundational understanding of the human person as a beloved child of God, made to flourish in communion with Him. My heart as a teacher shines through in my desire to empower clients through self-knowledge and psychoeducation. I am passionate about journeying alongside others, guiding them toward greater wholeness and helping them unlock their inner strength to cope with life’s challenges.

I take a holistic and individualized approach, using therapeutic modalities such as person-centered therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), attachment-based therapy, trauma-informed care, and elements of internal family systems (IFS).

I currently work with individual adults, adolescents, and families. My areas of focus include anxiety, depression, grief and loss, self-growth, life transitions, relationships, parenting, trauma, PTSD and abuse.

I am available virtually and offer flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
